About Universal Character Counter
A simple tool, built to stay simple.
Why this exists
Many counter sites bury the result under pop-ups, ask you to sign up or send everything you type to a server. Universal Character Counter does one thing differently: it counts characters, words, sentences and reading time instantly and for free, with nothing to sign up for and nothing that can later be put behind a paywall.
How the counter works
Your text is analysed entirely inside your own browser, using standard JavaScript and the browser’s built-in text segmentation. Nothing you type is ever transmitted to any server — not even anonymised. Once the page has loaded, you can disconnect from the internet and the counter works just the same.
How it stays free
This site is supported by advertising. There is no premium tier and no feature held behind a paywall — the ads are what make every part of the tool free and unlimited.
Privacy by design
The text you check can say a lot about you — a draft email, a school essay, a private message. This tool was built so that it cannot see it: the code runs in your browser, the counts stay in your browser, and no text leaves your device. There are no analytics that track what you typed.
Part of the Universal family
Universal Character Counter is one of several free utility tools built on the same principle: solve one real problem well, keep it free, and respect your time. All tools share the same clean, fast design with no dark patterns, no upsells, and no friction.
